Poultry Nutrition: Making Your Own Turkey Ration
Are you concerned about meeting the nutritional needs of your turkeys? To maintain good health and to ensure your birds are producing delicious, nutrient dense meat, your turkeys need excellent nutrition. Many poultry keepers rely on pelleted feeds most of which don't meet optimal nutrient requirements. Keepers often find when they feed scratch mixes that birds will ignore many of the grains and seeds used in these mixes. Can we do better? Yes, and for a lower cost too.
This short online course shows you how to make a balanced and highly nutritious feed or ration for your turkeys cheaply and efficiently. Turkeys have very specific nutritional requirements which are very different from chickens and other poultry. Its critical to meet these requirements throughout the turkey's life span especially if you are buying day olds and raising them for meat. Your birds get the best feed possible, a mash based on formulea used by farmers for years to make farm based feed rations prior to the advent of processed pelleted feeds.
We will show you how to simply make your own turkey mash or ration from easily purchased ingredients at reasonable cost and minimum effort. Taking into account the needs of turkeys at different ages, we show you how to make three different mashes suitable for age ranges.
This mash, which can be adjusted for their age requirements, feeds the turkeys we raise from day olds to 12 weeks every year for sale at Christmas. The birds are very well fed and have a wonderful life with us on the farm. Turkeys are a pleasure to raise. They have a curious nature and like to interact with humans. They love being taken for a ride in the trailer! (see photo)
