First Aid for Poultry: Recognise and treat common ailments
Anyone who keeps chickens or other poultry has experienced the frustration of having them become unwell and not being able to easily identify and treat their health problem. Unfortunately taking your bird to the vet is not always an option. This can be due to financial restraint but it is more likely because not many vets are trained to treat birds, or worse, regard poultry as a "throw away" item. In our area we are lucky to have a vet that treats birds, but that's not the case for everyone.
This short course looks at common ailment experienced by chickens (and occasionally ducks, geese and turkeys) and shows you have to recognise and treat them. More importantly, the course helps you approach the "triage" of your sick bird, deciding when you should treat, go to the vet regardless, or euthanise.
This is the first of two short courses in poultry first aid. The second course takes the injuries that birds can commonly experience and shows your how to triage, recognise and treat common injuries.
